The Metuchen – Edison – Piscataway, NJ chapter of the NAACP hosted their Freedom Fund Gala on June 7, 2024, featuring the esteemed Dr. Opal Lee as the keynote speaker. Known as the Grandmother of the Juneteenth movement, Dr. Lee was honored with the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award.
The event was graced by notable attendees, including Mrs. Tanesha Owens, MSN, ACNP-BC, CCRN, BCPA, Founder and President of All About You Healthcare Advocates, along with team members Le’Shonna Bruce (Executive Board Member) and Katherine Villacis (Director of Clinical Outreach). We were also privileged to have Terry McLellan, CEO of SunNav Independent Patient Advocacy in Texas, join us.
Dr. Lee shared her inspiring life journey, recounting the harrowing experience of watching her childhood home burn down at the hands of an angry mob. Despite this devastating event, she persevered, attending college while raising her children and becoming a formidable activist in the civil rights movement. Her speech at the gala was a beacon of hope, unity, and love, emphasizing how these values can unite us and drive positive change in our world.
It was an unforgettable night for my team and me, filled with inspiration and a renewed commitment to making a difference!
